Earlier in the day I witnessed a weirdly angry and seemingly kind of insane, unbalanced older female academic get in a ridiculous shouting match with another academic about conference badge rules & regulations, and immediately I thought AMY BISHOP and had a 5-second irrational panic that she was about to shoot up the room. Luckily she just sat down in a huff and muttered under her breath for a while!

Thanks to a website called seatsandstools.com and my skills with a screwdriver, a Breuer chair which previously looked like this

now looks like this:

Admittedly the caning totally does not match, but it’s gonna be covered up by a cushion anyway. And at least now I won’t have to shriek “Don’t sit on that chair!!!” every time someone tries to sit down at my kitchen table. The chair looked like the before pic for close to a year before I got around to fixing this situation, so this is a MAJOR accomplishment.

Patti Smith, Just Kids.

I guess everybody already read this like a year ago, and I don’t know why it took me so long, but this one battered hardback copy (sans dust jacket) has been making the rounds of the Pratt Exhibitions department for some time and has finally made its way to me.

I wasn’t 100% on board with it right away…Patti Smith is a poet and I often kind of have a problem with prose written by poets. But now I am totally into it and it’s great. This maybe officially makes me some kind of wannabe loser but I was actually inspired to, um, create some “art” by this book. This was late at night and I discovered that all I really have in the way of art supplies these days are some cray-pas (where did I even get these?). Also a lot of brushes but no paints. And some manila envelopes. So I went to town with the cray pas on the manila envelopes. It turns out that white cray-pas on manila envelope actually looks kind of good! I produced about 4 drawings that were completely and utterly terrible and one drawing that is not totally terrible, just like 75% terrible. It is currently hanging on my kitchen wall.

I am also working on a mobile made out of paper cranes, which obviously has nothing to do with Patti Smith.

Also, it’s fascinating to me how obsessed Robert Mapplethorpe was with his own self-presentation. Like the part where he’s agonizing over whether he should wear one necklace, or two necklaces, or three necklaces, or maybe even no necklaces, and Patti is just like “oh my god can we just go to fucking Max’s already??!!” I mean she doesn’t actually say that, but that’s totally what she was thinking.

According to Slate, American wine consumption averages out to one bottle per person per month. ONE bottle. I mean, ????????????????? I would like to think that all these non-wine drinkers are just drinking whiskey instead, but probably not??

God, no wonder this country is going to hell in a handbasket.

I have just discovered an awesome historical personage!

I was flipping through the catalog for Swann’s upcoming Autographs sale and lot 83 is a “group of 24 receipts or ledger pages for household expenses” associated with Charles de Eon de Beaumont (1728-1810), who is described as “a French transsexual political adventurer, secret agent of Louis XV in Russia (1755), then minister to England.”

French transsexual political adventurer!!!

So I did some googling. Apparently the Chavelier d’Eon lived his first 49 years as a man and his/her last 33 years as a woman. He claimed to have been born female (although he was apparently 100% male physically at death) and petitioned Louis XVI for recognition as a woman. The petition was successful and the court actually mandated that Eon de Beaumont dress as a woman—and even granted him government money for a new wardrobe! In the early 1790s he offered to lead an all-female division of soldiers against the Hapsburgs, but sadly this offer was not taken up.
